Abstract
Food insecurity is a challenge globally, requiring multifaceted and culturally informed approaches. Increasingly Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) are being recognised as a resource to respond to local challenges, context and realities such as food shortages. Guided by the Ubuntu research approach and Indigenous research design, the study purposively and snowball sampled 11 primary participants and four key informants to explore how Indigenous Knowledge Systems can be incorporated into modern food security interventions based on lessons from the Ndebele people of Torvo, Ward 1. Ndebele IKS data were collected, using dialogues, walks and talks and work parties. Thematic analysis was used. The study established knowledge documentation, collaboration between external stakeholders and local communities, policy advocacy, monitoring and evaluation as well as incorporating traditional foods into modern diets are strategies to integrate Ndebele IKS into food security interventions. It is recommended that social workers as community development practitioners prioritise participatory approaches that involve the active participation and engagement of community members in addressing food insecurity.
